VEHICLE DYNAMICS MEASUREMENT

A Bit of Theory:

Measuring the lean angle of motorcycles is a challenge that we'd like to briefly introduce here. In principle, measuring lean angle requires a so-called 3-axis accelerometer. Such an accelerometer (IMU) measures gravity and its orientation with respect to it. So far, so good. With our WingMan, we can determine its orientation even when it's stationary, and therefore, the angle to the ground.

But now, the motorcycle is in constant motion, and especially the forces in corners cancel each other out. One of the reasons we don't fall on our faces while riding a motorcycle. To measure these forces, we use a 3-axis gyroscope. A gyroscope measures the rate of rotation in all three axis directions, allowing us to determine the relative cornering position. By combining the accelerometer and gyroscope data, we can then calculate the lean angle. To refine this calculation even further, various filters and data from, for example, the magnetometer are used.

Now, a bit of practice

Up to this point, it's all been theoretical and can be well implemented in software. However, a motorcycle generates a multitude of interference frequencies; even the engine's vibrations can disrupt the accuracy of the sensors. Additionally, there's the magnetic field of the alternator as another interfering source. In addition to the disruptions from the engine, road, and surroundings, we have further inaccuracies in the calculation. Tire width, the natural camber of the road, and riding behavior further compound the measurement's inaccuracy. Finally, the installation of the WingMan should be mentioned; depending on its mounting position, this can also alter the angle. The only way to obtain an extremely precise lean angle is through laser measurement of the vehicle. Therefore, we must make some compromises in terms of everyday practicality when measuring the lean angle.
